Marathon Wild Bird Center at Crane Point

(This mature Northern Gannet was interpreted, in Marathon, FL, on his fall migration to the Central and Southern Americas where he would spend the winter. At this rehabilitation center for native and migrating wild birds, he is enjoying a fresh water shower after a meal of fish.)

The Marathon Wild Bird Center is located on the northern section of the nature trail. Since 1998 the rescue hospital has rehabilitated over 6,000 wild birds of different species and released them back into their habitat.

The Wild Bird Center claimed Francis and Mary Crane's old garage and tennis courts on the grounds of the Crane Point House. Over the years the garage was outfitted with a full hospital for taking x-rays and performing surgical procedures. Indoor cages keep injured and sick wild birds safe and comfortable during their recovery. After a period of time in the hospital, the birds are released to the outside facility. There you will be able to observe the recovering pelicans, double crested cormorants, gulls of all types, hawks, ospreys, shorebirds, songbirds (passerines).

The Wild Bird Center's volunteers are trained by the director of the Center who is a state and federal licensed rehabilitator. The volunteers assist with the bird rescues and rehabilitation. They are all knowledgeable and helpful and will gladly answer your questions.
